NPSC Indigenous Student Trustee Recognized for Cultural Leadership
Posted on 12/05/2024
The Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board is proud to highlight a feature by BayToday.ca North Bay about St. Joseph-Scollard Hall (SJSH) Grade 12 student and Indigenous Student Trustee, Cheyney Chevrier.
Cheyney has been serving as the Indigenous Student Trustee since the 2023-2024 school year. This role is filled through an appointment by Mkwa Doodem, the Indigenous student advisory group at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall. As Indigenous Student Trustee, Cheyney, along with Student Trustee Joy Akomah, serves as a voice for students, advocates for student interests, and ensures their perspectives are shared with the Board of Trustees, particularly as it relates to Indigenous Education.
Cheyney plays a key role in leading the organization and facilitation of Indigenous educational initiatives at SJSH and in our system, including the school’s Orange Shirt Day, educational sessions to support the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Treaties Recognition week, and important cultural activities such as the community Pow Wow hosted by SJSH, and more.
We extend a Chi-Miigwech to Cheyney for her passion and the indelible mark her compassionate leadership is making on our NPSC and greater community as we walk forward together on our Truth and Reconciliation journey.
