Today, on the 11th day of the 11th month, the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board (NPSC) honours Remembrance Day. This is a special time to recognize and give thanks for the many brave veterans who have served and sacrificed for Canada in times of war, conflict, and peace.
Acts of Remembrance in Our Schools
Throughout this week, students and staff across our NPSC schools are engaging in acts of remembrance, from school ceremonies to classroom discussions and activities that honour the remarkable and immeasurable service of the members, past and present, of the Canadian Armed Forces.
As a Catholic education community, the concept of service is both familiar and deeply meaningful to us. To live in the service of others is among the most sincere and honourable ways to live one’s life. We also recognize that service takes many forms, and while each is essential to the common good, we hold in profound respect those who have dedicated themselves to the defence of our country and the pursuit of peace.
How Students Are Learning During Remembrance Day
- Ceremonies and Assemblies: Students participate in school-wide Remembrance Day services and liturgies, observing moments of silence, sharing prayers, and engaging in readings that honour the service and sacrifice of Canadian veterans.
- Art and Creative Expression: Students create poppies, posters, collages, and other artwork to reflect on the meaning of Remembrance Day, including contributions to Legion contests and school displays such as wreaths and bulletin boards.
- Book Studies and Classroom Discussions: Through read-alouds, shared readings, and discussions — including texts like A Poppy is to Remember, In Flanders Fields, and The Peace Book — students explore the history, symbolism, and significance of Remembrance Day, and reflect on themes of peace, courage, and service.
- Guest Speakers and Veteran Connections: Canadian Armed Forces members, community veterans, and special guests engage with students during assemblies and classroom visits, sharing their experiences and deepening students’ understanding of service and sacrifice.
- French-Language and Cross-Curricular Learning: Students engage with Remembrance Day themes in French through songs, poetry, and vocabulary activities. Across subjects, lessons integrate art, history, and literacy to reinforce understanding of remembrance and peace.
- School-Wide Engagement: Morning announcements, prayers, and reflections throughout the week highlight Remembrance Day themes, sharing student work and fostering a sense of community-wide participation and respect.
Reflecting with Gratitude
As we pause in reflection at this time, we remember that without the sacrifices made by Canadian veterans, we would not enjoy the many freedoms we have today. Within our context, we are especially mindful of the gift of Catholic education, for without the service of those who came before us, learning and life in Canada would look very different than they do today.
We remember, we pray, and we give thanks for those who served and continue to serve Canada.
