Black History Month: Learning, Reflecting, and Celebrating Black History
Posted on 02/01/2026

Each February, we join schools and communities across Canada in observing Black History Month, a time to honour and uplift the stories, contributions, and lived experiences of Black peoples in our shared nation.

This year’s national theme, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations—From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” invites us to reflect on the enduring legacy of Black Canadians who have shaped our communities and continue to inspire future generations.

While this year marks 30 years since Black History Month was formally recognized in Canada, we also acknowledge that the histories, contributions, and resilience of Black peoples did not begin with — and are neither defined by — official recognition. Black history carries meaning far beyond any single month, rooted in generations of lived experience, faith, leadership, creativity, and community.

At the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board, Black History Month is approached with gratitude and humility. Across our Catholic schools, learning experiences will include prayer and reflection, classroom discussions and book studies, artistic and creative expression, and cross-curricular learning that highlights Black voices, stories, and achievements. These experiences invite students to deepen their understanding, celebrate excellence, and reflect on justice, dignity, and belonging.

As a Catholic education community, guided by the Gospel call to love and respect the dignity of every person, we reaffirm our commitment to learning, reflecting, and growing, not only during the month of February, but throughout the year.
