This program will enable students to experience the unique respect
for life that permeates to languages and culture. The Ojibwe Language is
an Algonquian language spoken throughout the Great lakes. Anishnaabe
(Ojibwe, Ojibwa, or Anishnaabe) people are located throughout the
various regions across Ontario. There are many dialects and subdialects
in the Anishnaabe Language. The students in this program will be
introduced to the Anishnaabe Language and Culture of the Nbisiing
Anishnaabek (Nipissing First Nation).
We are proud to offer the
Native as a Second Language program in our Board at Our Lady of Sorrows
School, St. Alexander and Mother St. Bride Elementary School and St.
Joseph-Scollard Hall Secondary School. The Native Language program is
guided by the Ministry of Ontario Curriculum guidelines. Primary (K–3)
students will experience a minimum of 20 minutes of instruction and
Junior and intermediate students will receive a minimum of 40 minutes of
instruction per day. Students receive a grade which is reported on the
Ontario Provincial Report Card.
The program is designed to provide a dynamic and challenging curriculum with the following goals for our students:
- Develop a general understanding of the nature and function of the Ojibwe language
- Develop a foundation of language knowledge and skills
- Develop an understanding of the Native language as an expression of a distinct culture
- Appreciation of Native cultures and teaching including ceremonies, drumming and smudging
