Secondary Hybrid Learning Model
On November 16th, 2020 St. Joseph-Scollard Hall at the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board (NPSC) began learning in a ‘Hybrid Learning Model’. The new hybrid model blends face-to-face learners with virtual learners in the same class under the direction of the home-school classroom teacher. This means that virtual learners will be participating in lessons and in classroom discussions, with their classmates who are attending school in-person.
This hybrid model has numerous benefits including offering a seamless transition from in-class learning to remote learning, should a student be required to stay home for any length of time. All students will receive the same classroom instruction from their teachers, and students learning virtually will be able to collaborate with their peers learning in-person. In addition, all students will follow the same school day schedule and collaborative learning relationships are maintained and strengthened within the same classroom.

Can my child easily change between face-to-face and virtual learning?
Although the hybrid model provides greater flexibility, NPSC requires all families make a firm commitment to either virtual or in-class learning, so appropriate health and safety considerations can be accommodated. Requests to change from one mode of delivery to another are provided, prior to the start of each Octomester.
How will attendance be recorded?
Student attendance will be taken each day for virtual and in-class students. Classroom teachers will outline expectations for students regarding attendance as well as the schedule for the class’ daily learning. If a student will not be attending virtual or in-person class, parents/guardians must still contact the school to let the office know of the absence.
Are other school boards in Ontario implementing the hybrid model of virtual learning?
Yes. Many other school boards in Ontario have already successfully implemented a hybrid model.
How will virtual students access the learning taking place in the classroom?
The primary communication platform for students and parents is Edsby. Students will also access coursework and lessons using Google Classroom and other Google Apps (G Suite for Education). Please review the letter from the board regarding online safety and privacy for virtual learners.
Can the Board provide technology for students learning virtually?
If a student in your household requires technology or access to wifi to facilitate virtual learning, please get in touch with the school principal as soon as possible to make the appropriate arrangements.
If a student is required to stay home or cannot attend school, can they learn virtually?
If your child cannot attend school (for example, due to COVID-19 symptoms or a requirement to self-isolate), but is still able to participate in classroom learning, he/she may login virtually and continue learning from home.
